It seems everyone has a different name for our dear friend Physalia physalis. Perhaps the most common name is, of course, the Portuguese man o’ war - but these siphonophores are also called bluebottles, or by-the-wind sailors (which is actually a term for the Genus Velella, but people often use it simply for the man o’ war).

So tell me - what do you call this amazing colonial Cnidarian?

  2. socratesagrees answered: I’ve always called them Man O’ Wars. It’s the only way I’ve heard them referred to as, but it also just sounds awesome.
